A new sports betting franchise entered the Kenyan market after mCheza was launched at a press briefing at Nairobi Serena Hotel on Wednesday.

The brand seeks to create an interactive platform where football fans can create accounts and predict scores for football matches played across the world to stand a chance of winning prizes.

Speaking at the briefing, Kenya Betting Control and Licensing Board chairman Wambua Musili said he was optimistic that mCheza would make a positive impact in the betting industry.

“We as a regulator would like to create an even playing field for betting firms,” Musili said. “We have put measures in place to ensure that the increased competition in the betting industry benefits football fans.”

mCheza also announced a partnership with global gaming company Intralot and also Acumen Communications Ltd (ACL) in a move aimed at transforming the gaming sector in Kenya.

Chief executive Peter Karimi revealed that the partnership will invest $15 million (Sh1.5 billion) in sports betting in East Africa.

“We want to tap into the Kenyan market but with responsible betting in order to give enthusiasts a different experience,” Karimi said.

ACL director Julie Gichuru noted that the partnership will help in identifying good footballers at the grassroots level through outreach programmes.
