Indiza fires his way to top Rwanda Open chart

Mumias Golf Club’s Dismas Indiza fired his way to the top of the leader board after two rounds of the 2014 Rwanda Open at the Kigali Golf Club in the Nyarutarama area Kigali on Thursday.
The long-hitting Indiza, who was three shots behind round one leader Jean Baptiste Hakizimana after the first round, shot a superb round of six under par 66 for a total of four under par 140. His round included several birdies and a couple of bogeys on the tough par 72 course where he was two shots ahead of Hakizimana who shot his second 71 for two under par 142.

Another Kenyan pro Sullivan Muthugia remained in third place on two over par 146 after firing two over par 74 in the second round of the Rwf 27m(about $10,000) event which has attracted a field of 30 professionals and 100 amateurs.

Emerging for the first time on the leader board was David Wakhu on 148, just a shot better than Nakuru Golf Club’s Richard Ainley.

Nyanza-based David Odhiambo who was placed fourth after one round, dropped to sixth to tie with Uganda’s leading professional Deo Akope on six over par 150.

STRONG FIELD

A strong contingent of 12 Kenyan pros are among the field of 30 eyeing the title in the event being sponsored by GoTV, Serena, and Equity Bank.

The amateurs who are divided into two categories started their battle for the fabulous prizes on Thursday. Those playing off handicap nine and under like are playing four rounds.

The Kenyan pros are expected back home on Sunday ready for a practise round on Monday of the KCB Golf Tour second leg at Royal Nairobi Golf Club where a 41 pros had been listed to play by Monday this week though two of them - Stefan Andersen and Nelson Mudanyi - will not be in action as they are in South Africa for the Sunshine Tour.

A total of one million shillings will be at stake at Royal Nairobi from Tuesday where the pros will be joined by the amateurs on Friday July 11 for the Pro-Am event.
