Dismas Indiza leads pros to Nyanza

Local professional golfers return to action this weekend almost a month after the KGU Chairman’s Prize held at Kenya Railway Golf Club where Royal Nairobi’s David Wakhu clinched the first prize.

A total of 29 pros are drawn alongside 120 amateurs at the lakeside Nyanza Golf Club’s par-70 course in Kisumu for the second leg of the Sports Kenya-sponsored tournament. The pros were included during the Legends Golf tournament.

Among the pros who are playing on Friday and Saturday will be David Wakhu, who shot 73 and 72 at Railway to beat Justus Madoya by two shots.

Also drawn are Mumias-based Dismas Indiza, local pro Peter Owino, Thika’s Simon Ngige, Anil Shah, Kopan Timbe and Richard Ainley.

Friday’s round gets underway at 10am, while the pros will be teeing off first at 6.30am during Saturday’s round where the pros will be joined by over 100 amateurs.

The pros are playing for a Sh500,000 purse while over a dozen prizes will be at stake for 120 amateurs who will compete.

“The course is a bit dry since it has not been raining here but I have been practising so we will see how it goes tomorrow and Saturday,’’ said Indiza after a round of practice.

Back in Nairobi, a field of 150 golfers will be at Karen Country Club for the annual Sky Team golf tournament. The event will be hosted by Kenya Airways, a member of the Sky Team Alliance which brings together over 19 airlines globally.

Meanwhile, over 40 Kenyan lady golfers are in Arusha for the Arusha Ladies Open, a 36-hole medal event set for the weekend at the nine-hole Arusha Gymkhana Club.

On Friday, the ladies will play at Kilgolf Resort at Usa River, about 40km from Arusha. Among those in Arusha is legendary Florence Maina, former Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairman Lucie Maina, Golf Park’s Agnes Nyakio and Muthaiga’s Agnes Wanjiru.

Back in Nairobi, a field of 120 ladies will be at Royal Nairobi Golf Club for the Royal Ladies Open where among those drawn is Kenya Ladies Open Strokeplay champion Kellie Gachaga, Mary Karano, Mercy Nyanchama, Sarah Khanyereri and Naomi Wafula.

At Ruiru, over 150 golfers will be battling it out in the W. Ndururi Memorial which kicks off a number of major events at the club in the next one month.
