It is an early Valentine for golfers. The annual Maneno World Valentine golf tournament marks its 10th anniversary at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course this weekend.

A very popular event indeed at Muthaiga, the Maneno World event, sponsored by Ponyea India Medicare, like the previous events, has attracted a huge field of 240 players.

They include guests of Maneno World, drawn from almost every club in the greater Nairobi County.

Event founder and organizer Paul Richu, a member of Muthaiga Golf Club says besides some amazing prizes, other highlights will include free medical  check-ups for golfers, caddies, and Muthaiga Golf Club staff.

“We are excited that the event is getting bigger and popular by the year. We have received a big field and many more are on the waiting list,’’ said Richu.

He said there would be meat tasting experience, unique give-aways and a Red Dress Dinner and Dance event in the evening.

During last year’s tournament, Vipin Rajani then playing off handicap 11 posted an impressive 41 points on a course whose Competition Scratch Score (CSS) was 74. This means Rajani played eight shots better than his handicap which was then revised to (8.9) or nine.

He has been struggling since then until January 28 when he bounced back to win the Abdallah Bekah Memorial golf tournament with a score of 39 points.

He is back at handicap 11 and could this be his lucky year again in the Maneno World event?

Among those challenging Rajani this year, is handicap 13 Joe Mureithi, who finished sixth last year with 37 points.

He has been enjoying an excellent form lately and so is David Ombisi, a single figure handicap golfer, who came second to Rajani in the Abdallah Bekah Memorial last month.

Meanwhile, at the neighbouring Kiambu Golf Club, over 120 players will be battling it out for an array of prizes in the Johnnie Walker golf series.
