Golf Park’s George Felix shot level par 72 to take a narrow one shot lead in the first round of this year’s Winston Churchill Cup golf tournament at the par 72 Thika Sports Club course.

Felix picked a number of birdies but against several bogeys to close round one of the Golfer Of Year (GOTY) tournament just a shot better than Royal Nairobi’s Bo Ciera who fired one over par 73.

Railway’s Alfred Nandwa, who set off the first round with a birdie at the par five-first hole, made three straight bogeys thereafter from the third hole, but parred all the way to the 18th for two over par 74 to tie in third place with home player Patrick Kingori.

“The course is a bit tough particularly the fairways though the greens are very nice.

“Hope to try and get more birdies tomorrow,’’ said Nandwa, who finished a shot better than Kericho’s William Odera and John Kariuki while GOTY champion John Karichu was on four over par 76.

A field of 129 including 62 players in the subsidiary are taking part in this year’s tournament whose final round is set for Sunday.

At Karen, home player Martha Vincent, playing off handicap 15, beat off a strong challenge from a field of 150 golfers to emerge the overall winner of the Iway Africa golf tournament at the par 72 Karen course on Thursday.
