Kenya’s elite golfers travel to Nyeri this weekend for the Mount Kenya Championship, the second leg of the 2015 Golfer of The Year (Goty) series tournament at the nine-hole Nyeri Golf Club course.

Surprisingly, this year’s championship, coming just two weeks after the first leg, the Sigona Bowl at Sigona, has attracted a big field of 122 players drawn from different clubs in the country.

Half of this weekend’s field participated in last year’s event won by Railway’s Alfred Nandwa.

DID NOT PLAY IN SIGONA BOWL

Nandwa did not play during the Sigona Bowl as he shot rounds of 83, 79 and 77 to finish in 16th place with only two and half points.

Taking the Sigona Bowl with an impressive aggregate of three under par 213 that included a brilliant round of six under par 66 was the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort’s Justus Madoya.

He beat last year’s champion Nelson Simwa by seven shots and 2014 Goty champion John Karichu by five shots.

In Nyeri, focus will therefore will be on those three leading amateurs, Nandwa and others like Limuru’s Paul Muchangi, William Odera from Kericho, Kiambu’s Steve Karanja, Royal Nairobi’s Dennis Saikwa, Jeff Kubwa from Muthaiga, Karen’s Anthony Kinuthia and Nyeri’s own Dan Weru and Peter Ndgewa.

Teeing off for the first round is set for 7am tomorrow, with the final round scheduled for Sunday morning.

At stake besides the Mount Kenya Championship trophy and an array of take-away prizes will be 24 points for the overall winner.

KGU TEAM

With the Kenya Golf Union expected to name its team for the Africa Zone Six Championship in Uganda in three or so weeks, these first two events in the Goty series are very crucial for those hunting for places in the national team.

The 2015 will take place at Uganda Golf Club in April with the exactly dates to be known also in few weeks.
