A small field of 60 players has been drawn to play in the Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship (AAGTC) fundraiser tournament Friday at the par-71 Muthaiga Golf Club course. And chairman of the tournament’s organising committee, David Nyakango, is a worried man.

“We collected just over Sh200,000 in the first fundraiser tournament at Vet Lab Sports Club on August 14 and we were hoping to have better support for this afternoon’s event," said Nyakango. The committee needs at least Sh10 million to host Africa’s major amateur golf event. “The notice was rather short at Vet Lab and we couldn’t raise enough," said Nyakango. He appealed to golfers to support today’s tournament. Post entries are welcome and entry fee is Sh2,500 per player.

Among the players drawn for the second leg of the fundraiser series include Muthaiga Open champion and national team captain Bhavnish Chandaria, Kenya Golf Union chairman Anthony Muhoro, Kenya Open chairman Peter Kanyago and Patrick Obath.

The third event of the fundraiser tournaments will take place at Limuru Country Club on October 2. The AAGTC will also be staged at Limuru Club from October 17 to 21.

In Nyeri on Saturday, a field of 120 will tackle the hilly course during the Family Bank golf tournament. This is the second golf tournament to be held in the Mount Kenya region this year after the Nanyuki event held at the Nanyuki Sports Club.
