Huge field to do battle on par-72 Ruiru Club course

What you need to know:

  • The par-72 course hosts the Twiga Chemicals golf tournament this weekend where a field of 121 players are drawn to vie for over a dozen prizes.
  • Kakamega Golf Club will host the annual Gold Fields Trophy.

It is back to back action at Ruiru Sports Club this weekend following last week’s Accountants golf Day where Samuel Otieno celebrated his first major success in his career.

The par-72 course hosts the Twiga Chemicals golf tournament this weekend where a field of 121 players are drawn to vie for over a dozen prizes.

Club captain Martin Karanja has said more players are still welcome through post entries. “Ruiru Sports Club, being an 18-hole course, can still accommodate more players on both morning and afternoon session,’’ said Karanja on Wednesday.

He said this weekend’s tournament will be linked with a Tree Planting exercise.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION

“The club has embarked on an aggressive tree planting campaign recently, with a goal of planting over 4000 trees across the course,’’ added the captain.

The tournament will feature “Nyama Choma” at the eighth hole which has proved popular with the players. The club’s green keeper, Joseph Mugo, says the course is now in an excellent condition.

“We have been working hard to improve our course to give golfers a wonderful experience. The toughness of the course has lately been an extra attraction, particularly to visiting golfers who are keen to gauge themselves," said Mugo.

Among the players drawn to vie for the overall prize include Chege Kariuki, Harun Gicho, Peter Kimani and Rugu Njoroge. Those expected to battle it out for the ladies prize include Irene Wamoro, Grace Mugo and Caroline Mwikali.

Elsewhere, Kakamega Golf Club will host the annual Gold Fields Trophy. Besides home players, the tournament has attracted players from Mumias, Nyanza, Kisii, Kericho, Kitale, and Nandi Bears.

Those drawn include pros Peter Owino and David Odhiambo from Nyanza and long-hitting Dismas Indiza from Mumias. Fresh from his nine shots victory in last weekend’s Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero Tour at Railway Golf Club, Indiza, is likely to start as the hot favourite.

During the Railway event, Indiza shot four under par in each round, to win going away from second placed Tony Omuli of Golf Park.

A field of 70 players was drawn for the annual event though the captain is still accepting more players through Post entries. Among the amateurs to watch include Evans Manono, Joseph Obiero, and Kisii Sports Club’s Charles Aburi among many others.
