Mumias Golf Club’s Dismas Indiza Tuesday firing four under par 68 at the par 72 Sigona Golf Club course to claim a four-shot lead in day one of this year’s Jamii Telkom/PGK Masters.

Playing a rather conservative round, the long-hitting Indiza eagled the par five-fourth, parred the rest at the front nine while at the back nine, he made a birdie at the 10th hole. He stayed on course up to the 15th where he picked up his second eagle and appeared destined for a clean round for the day until he drove out of bound at the 17th to drop two shots for a back nine one under that added to the day’s 68.

“I pushed to the left bush. It was painful dropping two shots there, but not to worry, there is still a lot of golf to be played,” said Indiza, who starts Wednesday’s round, four clear shots from Nyanza’s David Odhiambo shot two under par 70, a round which included four birdies and three bogeys.

Sigona’s pro John Wangai tied with Limuru’s John Kagiri and Muthaiga’s Greg Snow on one under par 71, while three others - Simon Ngige (Thika), Nelson Mudanyi (Muthaiga) and Royal Nairobi’s Charan Thethy - were on level par 72.

A field of 49 players including leading amateurs turned up for the event.

The pros are playing for Sh1 million purse where the winner will take home Sh235,000. The second round of the 72-hole event gets under way at 8am today. From Sigona, pros will then move to Karen Country Club for the weekend’s KCB Karen Masters.
