This year’s Junior Coast Open Golf Championship, usually a curtain-riser for the annual Coast Open (Barry Cup) whose first round was set for Wednesday morning at the Links Mombasa Golf Club course, has been postponed to next month.

The event and Coast Junior Golf convenor, Eric Nyongesa, who is a past captain and chairman of Mombasa Golf Club, postponed the event because of insufficient entries. Traditionally, both the Junior and the century-old Barry Cup are held in the first week of August.

However, over the past three years, the Barry Cup has been taking place towards the end of July, denying the juniors who are in school a chance to participate.

“I wish to inform all that the Junior Coast Open has been postponed to the August Holiday when most juniors would be available,” said Nyongesa, one of the leading golfers at the Coast.

By Tuesday morning, only 10 entries had been received mainly from Nyali and Mombasa clubs.

A total of 82 players had listed their names for the championship, though more names were still being awaited at the time of the entry deadline, which was 7pm on Tuesday.
