Kenya Golf Union picks team for President’s Cup in Zambia

  • The President’s Cup, the newest in the African continent was donated and is being hosted by the president of Africa Golf Confederation(AGC) Ambassador Joe Malanje.

nThe Kenya Golf Union (KGU) on Wednesday announced its team of four players who will represent the country in the inaugural President’s Cup at Nkana Golf Club Kitwe Zambia from September 28 to October 3.

The team is made up of the country’s top three amateurs on the basis of the 2013/2014 Golfer Of The Year (Goty) series and the current top junior. KGU chairman Peter Warui said he expects the players to perform well in Zambia.

“These are the best three amateurs and the country’s top junior and we therefore have high hopes in them to perform well in Zambia,” Warui said, adding that the event will help amateur golfers in Africa improve their game. The top three senior players are the reigning Goty champion and current leader John Karichu from Limuru Country Club, Nelson Simwa from Vet Lab Sports Club and Golf Park’s Tony Omuli.

Joining them will Mathew Wahome from Nyali Golf and Country Club Mombasa. The team will be led by Warui as the head of delegation and Eldoret Golf Club’s Andrew Chelogoi as the team manager.

The team started training at Muthaiga Golf Club on Wednesday under national coach and Muthaiga resident professional Anil Shah.

Most of the active AGC member countries, which usually feature in the All Africa Amateur Team Championship, are expected to travel to Kitwe for the championship.

INAUGURAL EVENT

The President’s Cup, the newest in the African continent was donated and is being hosted by the president of Africa Golf Confederation(AGC) Ambassador Joe Malanje.

The inaugural event is open to teams from Africa and elsewhere in the world.

Each country will be represented by a team of four players and two officials (head of delegation and team manager).

The AGC president will meet the cost of local transport and accommodation while each country will have to meet the cost of return air tickets.
