Wafula birdies a number of holes to win at Muthaiga

The Ladies Golf Legends tournament has become one of the competitions approved by Kenya Ladies Golf  Union.

Organised by former national team players Florence Maina, Lucie Maina and Agnes Wanjiru, the tournament, held for the first time last Friday, aims at honouring players who have represented Kenya since 1985.

This year’s edition was held on Friday at Muthaiga Club was won by handicap two Naomi Wafula.

The handicap two Wafula, now attached to Muthaiga and who is following in the footsteps of her mentor Rose Naliaka, birdied a number of holes including a two club at the par four-ninth to produce an impressive four over par 75 gross for victory.

BECOME ANNUAL EVENT

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, KLGU vice chairman June Waweru said: “The union is impressed by the idea and has taken over the tournament. It will become an annual event approved by KLGU.”

Waweru paid tribute to all the past chairmen of the union who produced national team players for tournaments like the Gilberson and Page Trophy as well as All Africa Challenge Trophy.

“It is through their leadership that today we are honouring these great ladies of our country’’ said Waweru.

Wanjiru said they were inspired to start the tournament by Muthaiga Club’s decision to honour its member Florence Maina last year.

Junior Golf Foundation President Josere Gitonga said KGU will team up with the ladies to honour Kenya’s all-time golf greats.

Among the legends honoured was Rose Naliaka.
