Golfers from the Mount Kenya region will converge at the hilly Nyeri Golf Club course this weekend for the fourth round of the Kenya Airways Golf Safari series.

A field of 100 golfers from Nyeri, Nyahururu and Nanyuki, has been drawn for the event with three slots at stake to the grand finale of the series early next year. Nyeri Golf Club captain Joel Githanda said the course at the moment is playing long due to the on-going rain in the region, and low scores are anticipated.

“At the moment the course favours those in the low handicap bracket as they are able to carry the ball over the distance,” said Githanda. He, however, said the rough had been reduced to manageable levels. Among the single figure handicap golfers drawn include Nyahururu’s handicap six golfer Simon Ngugi (right), Boniface Waikwa (six), Isaac Githui (seven) and Moses Karuga (eight).

Leading the local challenge will be veteran George Kibira currently playing off five, lady golfer Stella Mwangi (eight) and Daniel Weru playing off handicap six.

GREAT CONDITION

Elsewhere, Nyanza and Western Kenya golfers will be at Nyanza Golf Club course for the fourth leg of the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) series dubbed “Tembea Kenya”.

The event has attracted a field of 100 golfers from Nyanza, Kakamega, Mumias, Kisii and Kericho. During the third leg at Nakuru, Kamonjo Kiburi posted 42 points, so far the best score in the series, to claim the overall prize.

Club professional David Odhiambo said the course is in great condition although the greens are likely to be quick. Among the local players drawn for the event is Orange Kenya Golf Trophy champion Noah Winja.

At the Coast, Nyali Golf Club will host the Safaricom Business Challenge series that has attracted players from most of the Coast-based clubs.
