Home player Richard “Manji’’ Kabugi emerged the winner of the first leg of the Nation Media Group-sponsored golf challenge at the par 72 Nanyuki Sports Club course at the weekend.
The handicap 13 Kabugi, who was among the players drawn in the morning, posted 39 points. The score remained unbeaten until the end, for the Nanyuki Sports Club green-keeper Kabugi to clinch the top prize in the tournament that attracted a record field of 101 players.
“I did not think that I was going to win with this score. Being the green-keeper I knew exactly where to place my shots and how to attack the pins,’’ said Kabugi, popularly known as “Manji’’.

He received a Ben Sayers 2016 Deluxe golf bag from Nation Media Group Human Resources Director David Kiambi.
Kabugi’s round included two birdies, one from each nine, a number of bogeys and a scratch at the 15th.
“It feels great to win such an event like the Nation Challenge. I am going to practice for the grand finale in Limuru,’’ he added.
Kabugi beat Nyeri Golf Club’s Justus Mugaa and another Nanyuki player Kuldip Hunjan by one point. Taking the ladies prize with a score of 36 points was Helen Kurutu while Ben Gachie won the staff prize with 33 points.
Former NMG CEO Linus Gitahi was among the participants. On Friday, NMG donated items worth Sh150,000 to St Stevens Children’s Home in Timau.
