Kandu beats huge field at Nyali Club course

Lady golfer Mary Mwende Kandu beat a field of 135 at the par-71 Nyali Golf and Country Club to claim the overall title in the second edition of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers of East Africa tournament at the weekend.

The handicap 31 Kandu scratched the first hole and made a number of triple and double bogeys for 18 points in the first nine. She then carded 22 at the back nine for 40 points.

Paul Krijnen posted four over par 20 points in the front nine and, despite scratching the 12th, birdied the 13th and parred five holes for 19 points and a total of 39 points to take the men’s crown. He beat William Kaguta by a point and finishing third on 37 points was Keli Muindi.

The seniors prize went to John Riley (34). Agil Is-Haq, a member of both the junior and senior national team, was the junior winner.

Former Kenya Golf Union chairman David Ngugi (31) was the best guest while winning the nines were Suhas Gudka and J.K. Kim, both on 20 points.

Later, Equity Bank through its director of Corporate/SME Banking Rohit Kumar presented a Sh500,000 cheque to Robert Watene, chairman of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers.

At Nakuru, former Nakuru Golf Club lady captain Nancy Steinmann won the overall title of the CFC Life and Heritage Insurance tournament with 41 points made up of 19 and 22 points, beating a field of 117 other golfers. Sammy Ndungu (40) was second and Joseph Munene (39) third.
