Karen Club captain Gitau wins on home course

  • During this year’s tournament held over the weekend at the par 72 Karen course sponsored by Emrok Tea Factory course, Gitau, playing of handicap seven, beat Anne Mululu 6-4 in the semi-finals, to set a date with Nas Kiengo whom she went on to beat 3-2 in the final match to clinch the Cup.

During this year’s tournament held over the weekend at the par 72 Karen course sponsored by Emrok Tea Factory course, Gitau, playing of handicap seven, beat Anne Mululu 6-4 in the semi-finals, to set a date with Nas Kiengo whom she went on to beat 3-2 in the final match to clinch the Cup.

Kiengo, playing off 16, had qualified for the final after beating former Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairman Dorcas Mbalanya 7-5 in the other semi final match.

In the Stableford subsidiary which attracted a field of 136 players, Anne Mahinda posted 41 points to win by three points from Jane Karuku who had posted 38 points.

MEN'S CATEGORY

In the men’s section, Nkoregamba Mwebesa carded an impressive 40 points to win his first major event after a long time. He beat Kenya Golf Union treasurer Anthony Mogere by two points as Serah Bano and Chris Rwengo won the nines with 20 and 22 points.

Leading the guests was Bisher Fawaz who carded 37 points to win on countback from David Mugun. It was a tough day for former Karen chairman Jimmy Kimondo who could only manage 28 points.

But it at least his name was mentioned during the prize giving ceremony for having holed in one at the par three-fifth hole.

At Nyeri Golf Club, Kiambu’s Wanjiru Karume beat home player Stella Mwangi on countback with 85 gross to clinch the Silver division title during the ladies Open where Jennifer Ngure was third on 88 gross. The Bronze title went to Jane Ndirangu of Railway on 93 after beating Judy Waihenya on countback while Susan Ngure was third on 95 gross.

Nakuru’s Nancy Steinmann and Cathy Ngurani won the nines on 36 and 35 nett respectively.

On form Eddie Karumwa beat Anthony Munene and Baldev Singh on countback with 38 points to win the men’s subsidiary prize where Watson Njenga was the best winner on 36 points.
