Karichu is golfer of the year, again

Limuru Golf Club’s John Karichu tees off during the Nairobi District Foursomes Tournament last month at the Muthaiga Golf Club. He claimed his second Goty title at Muthaiga Club at the weekend.

Limuru Country Club’s John Karichu claimed his second back-to-back Golfer of The Year (Goty) title at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course at the weekend.

Playing off plus one handicap, Karichu posted two over par 73 in the first round and six over 77 in the second round. He later fired eight over 79 for a total of 16 over par 229 to claim the Muthaiga Open golf title.

It was, however, the poorest aggregate of the event in the recent years and compared to Karichu’s own score of 71 and 70 for 141 during the Mount Kenya Championship.

Abdullai second

Finishing second at Muthaiga during the weekend, was Abraham Abdullai from the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort with a three rounds total of 231 gross.

Golf Park’s Dennis Saikwa fired 74 to claim the first round gross title and Tony Omuli, also from Golf Park, won the second on 75. Home player, Evans Vitisia, carded 72 to claim the third round gross. The nett title went to Neer Chandaria on nett 222, after beating Dennis Maara on countback.

The three nett round winners were Steve Karanja(73), Taib Mohammed (71) and Samuel Ndonga on 73 nett. In the 18 hole subsidiary event, Washington Okeyo carded nett 72 to after beating John Gatharia on countback.

In Thika, H.S. Rayat won the combined February Mug and Ladies Medal with a nett of 70, four shots better than Lawrence Ngamau. Philip Mionki was the best in B division with nett 73 though after beating P.M. Ndungu on countback while Moses Gatonye fired an excellent nett 63.

At Nyahururu, the Club-Nite sponsored by Nation Media Group through Sporton! newspaper saw F.M. Kabona beat A.K. Gathogo on countback with 39 points to claim the first prize.

In third place was Stephen Gitau with 38 points and winning the two nines were Richard Kingori on 22 and S. Muriuki who posted 23 points. M. Githinji won both the longest drive and nearest to pin prizes.

Captain’s prize

In Mombasa, Brian Masika posted 42 points to win the Captain’s Prize ahead of Eric Nyongesa on 43 and S. Odhiambo, also with 43 points. Winning the first round on nett 68 was P.N. Mwangi while the second round title went to Peter Kimanga on 36 points.

The best past captain was S.M. Kamau on 48 and Kishor Chohan was the best senior with 45 points.

Leading the ladies was Diana Munyao on 27 points, who was followed in second place by Florence Karimi on 23. Kim Lanxe on 49 was the best guest, beating Jose Tharao by two points.

Ismael Edd topped the caddies list with 39 points, beating S. Majanga by the narrow margin of one point, with M. Rogate emerging as the best lady caddie on 56.
