Kenya’s  final squad for the inaugural Victoria Cup golf championship set for June 3 at Muthaiga Golf Club will be named Wednesday.

National team coach Brian Njoroge has expressed satisfaction with the team’s preparation ahead of the championship.

“We have made progress in various aspects and we will continue with training on Sunday and Monday after the final squad of 10 players is named,’’ said Njoroge.

He said the team has been been focusing on foursomes and four ball better ball which has been the weakest area for Kenyan teams in international events.

Last month, Kenya Golf Union (KGU) announced a new team selection criteria besides the Golfer of The Year (Goty) series. KGU organised a 36-hole national team trial event for the top 15 Goty players plus top three players from every club in the country.

BOYCOTTED TRIALS

Although some of the top 15 from the Goty series boycotted the trials, KGU went ahead and picked up a squad of 12 from the more than 50 players who participated in the trials.

The 12 players who have been in training at Muthaiga are Neer Chandaria, John Gitonga, John Karanja (Muthaiga), Simon Mulama (Nyali), Bo Ciera (Royal), John Lejirmah, Elias Indeche (Golf Park), Moi Lemoshira, Mike Kisia (Vet Lab), James Ndunda (Machakos), Edwin Kiarie (Thika) and Dennis Maara (Limuru).

Each team is expected to have a squad of eight, although Njoroge said he will have 10 players who will include two reserves.

Meanwhile, Uganda will announce its final team on Monday. Uganda Golf Union president Johnson Omollo said his team was all set to beat Kenya at its home turf.
