- First leg of tourney heads to Nyeri this weekend before going to Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret
- Golfers participating in this year’s series will not only be battling for a ticket to South Africa for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge at the Sun City Golf Resort in South Africa, but also for a chance to contribute to promoting cancer awareness.
The second edition of the Pan Africa Life Golf Series gets underway this weekend at Nyeri Golf Club under a new banner and new attractions for golfers and the general public.
Golfers participating in this year’s series will not only be battling for a ticket to South Africa for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge at the Sun City Golf Resort in South Africa, but also for a chance to contribute to promoting cancer awareness.
Throughout the six events, Kenyans from all walks of life will get an opportunity to get free professional cervical, prostate and breast cancer consultation and screening services.
At the same time, Pan Africa Life Insurance company which started the series last year, will top up the entry fees the golfers will be paying to participate in the events towards the prevention, early detection and more affordable treatment of these ailments.
As part of the Cancer awareness programme, Pan Africa Life has invited the participation for other corporate organisations in the golf series dubbed “the Pan Africa Cancer Challenge.”
While Pan Africa life will organise the series, Africa Cancer Foundation - headed by Dorothy Nyong’o - and Philips Health Care East Africa, among other partners, will provide both screening and logistic support for the entirety of the series.
Speaking during the launch of the series in Nairobi yesterday, Pan Africa Life CEO Tom Gitogo said: “We wish to use the golf series to reach out to as many Kenyans as possible from across the country. We appreciate the gesture of those who have joined us in this worthy cause and we look forward to having more partners coming on board.”
Gitogo said he expects this year’s series to realise more Sh 5 million including Sh 1 million from Pan Africa Life’s parent company Sanlam Group.
Africa Cancer Foundation managing director Dorothy Nyong’o lauded Pan Africa Life’s initiative to fight what she called “rapidly growing cancer pandemic in the country.”
During the function, Philips East Africa donated Sh1,000,000, MTN Insurance Agencies Sh300,000 while AON Kenya, Chase Bank and Brainwave Communications each donated Sh100,000. Besides this weekend’s tournament at Nyeri, other events in the series will take place at Nyanza Golf Club, Kisumu County (May 24), Nakuru (June 23), Nyali (July 26), Eldoret (August 29) and the grand finale at Muthaiga (September 20).
