Mark Mbua fends off Steve Makau’s strong challenge to win

Mombasa Golf Club’s Mark Mbua emerged the winner of the weekend’s Well-Out Golf Tours tournament at the nine-hole Machakos Club course.

Playing off handicap 18, Mbua made a slow start, making only one par at the front nine for 17 points. However, two birdies with four holes to go at the back nine saw him finish with 24 points for a total of 41 to beat home player and former captain Steve Makau by a point.

“My game improved particularly at the nine but I didn’t think I would bring a winning score. I’m happy bringing such a good score at my only second outing here,’’ said Mbua who was in the four-ball of Yours Truly and Mombasa Golf Club chairman Eric Nyongesa.

MAKAU POSTED 40 POINTS

The handicap 15 Makau had posted 21 and 19 for 40 points. Another Mombasa golfer, David Ngunjiri. was third with a score of 39 points made up of 15 and 24. He beat home player Dee Kivuva (20, 19) on countback. The ladies’ prize went to Ruth Mumo with a score of 37 points, winning by one point from Mary Kandu.

The nines went to Steve Makau (21) and Mark Mbua (24) while Mbua also won the nearest to pin prize and Erick Nyongesa hit a massive 330 yards driver at the 18th to win men’s longest drive contest. The ladies’ prize went to former lady captain Mwongeli Nzioka.

Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, Isaac Chege from Well-Out Golf Tours company said the tournament, an initiative by golfers for golfers, will support more events in the country.

“Our aim is to promote golf in our own small way. I’m happy with the way Machakos has received us,’’ said Chege.
