Mercedes owners converge at Muthaiga, final destination Salzburg

All is set for the “Flight to Salzburg’’ as 110 golfers mostly Mercedes Benz owners, converge at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course on Friday afternoon, for the first ever Mercedes Trophy qualifier in Kenya.

They will be battling it out for some fabulous prizes in addition to an all-expenses paid for trip to Salzburg, Austria for the Mercedes Trophy regional final, for the top three qualifiers in today’s event.

D.T. Dobie is hosting today’s qualifier that is being held in Kenya for the first time.

This means Kenya now joins over 60 different countries in the world that have been hosting the qualifying events.

Today’s field has been divided into three divisions with respective winners clinching spots to travel to Salzburg.

The Kenya team will be captained by Willie Getata, the DT Dobie Government and Institutional Sales Manager.

They will be provided with complimentary air tickets, accommodation, green fees and ground transport during the event.

Among those drawn at Muthaiga are Scratch golfer Bhavnish Chandaria, a national team player who is also Muthaiga’s vice chairman.

He will lead those single figure handicap golfers, who include former Kenya number one Wachira Mahihu, Tanvir Sodi, Selest Kilinda, club captain Kavit Bhakoo, and Nazir Noordin.

The regional final later this month, will include a  “Drive to the Major” competition with golfers trying to be the closest to a marked line on a fairway. The winner will earn luxury accommodation at St Andrews in Scotland during the Open which will take place from July 15 to 20. Also at stake will be a spot in the “Monday After event” that will be played immediately after the Open at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews.

In Kitale, leading amateurs will tackle the par 73 Kitale course in the hunt for the Trans Nzoia Open golf title.

Leading the field will be Limuru Country Club’s John Karichu, who a couple of weeks ago, retained the Winston Churchill trophy at Thika for the third year running. His challengers include Alfred Nandwa, William Odera, Justus Madoya and Robinson Owiti.

Back in Nairobi, Kenya Golf Union (KGU) Peter Warui winds up his term of office with the KGU Chairman’s Prize being sponsored by Crown Paints, which has attracted a huge of over 200 players at Sigona Golf Club tomorrow.
