Muraguri beats huge field to win on Nyeri Club course

Kenya Railway Golf Club’s George Muraguri who won the fourth leg of the Kenya Airways Golf Safari series a week ago at Nyeri Golf Club was on the mark again at the weekend at the same venue, completing a two-day total of 76 points to win the Kibaki Trophy. 

Unlike in the Kenya Airways tournament where he won by a point, this time he had to beat Anthony Munene on countback.

Muraguri carded 36 points in the first round and an impressive 40 points, a round which included a number of pars,  while Munene playing off handicap nine, posted 38 points in each round to also wind up with 76 points.

Finishing on his own in third place with 74 points was Tarsem Sembi who beat James Mathenge by a point. Jacob Kamere took home the fifth prize after beating Fr Martin Ndgewa on count-back.

GROSS WINNER

The two-day gross winner was Solomon Karanja who carded 75 and 77 for 152 gross, beating Nyali Golf and Country Club’s Mathew Githinji on (84, 78) by 10 shots.

Pauline Kiguta took the ladies’ title with the best score of 77 points made up of 45 and 32 ahead of Stella Mwangi on 75. The long-hitting Regina Mumero finished third on 70. Leading the lady guests was Martha Karua with 64 points and Duncan Ndegwa was the best senior with 31 points.

Kiambu’s David Ndirangu who posted 65 points won a special award for being the most consistent player in the event having participated without fail since in 1977.

KAVIVYA WON IN MACHAKOS

At Machakos, Joseph Kavivya combined 17 and 21 for 38 points to win the Etihad Airways tournament. He beat former captain Tim Ruhiu, Fred Kilonzi, Francis Njeru and Gen Joe Musomba on countback. Jackson Nzioki was fifth with 37 point.

Winning the two nines were Victor Mutwii on 23 and Major Mumo on 20 while K. Kanyarua was the top guest on 36 points. He won after beating A. Mwangi on countback.

At Muthaiga, Lady golfer Nancy Ndungu won the overall title during the Peter Githua Foundation tournament where she fired 39 points made up of 18 and 21 points. The men’s title went to Pieter Hoffman with 38 points. He won by two points from Patrick Karanja while Peter Wambugu finished third on 35 points.
