Muthaiga’s Kubwa advances in Matchplay Championship

Muthaiga Golf Club’s Jeff Kubwa became the first play to qualify for the third round of this year’s Kenya Matchplay Championship which got underway at Sigona Golf Club on Tuesday.

Kubwa reached the third round without striking the ball after a no-show by Anthony Mwaura and R. Lemingani in the first round match whose winner was scheduled to play Kubwa in the second round.

Kubwa had earlier beaten Golf Park’s Elias Indeche 3-2. The Muthaiga player will now meet the winner of the match between Edwin Mudanyi and Simon Njogu who were still battling it out yesterday at the time of writing.

NDICHU WON

Home player John Ndichu beat I. Makokha 4-3 yesterday, while Railway’s Alfred Nandwa beat Simon Karo 6-5, and Limuru’s John Karichu easily beat Paul Orao 8-7. Royal’s Kenneth Bollo walked into the second round as R. Gichuki did not show up.

Bollo was due to meet S. Kimutai in the second round yesterday. On the first tee, Paul Muchangi beat Machakos’ James Ndunda 5-4, and Vet Lab’s Mike Kisia won 4-3 against A. Popat, and John Lejirma beat J. Mburu 2-1. Today’s third round starts at 8am, with quarter-final matches set for Thursday.

Meanwhile at Nyali Country Club, Edwin Miano won the Sunset Golfing Society with a score of 39 points, beating Aly Jamal by a point. In third place with 37 points after beating J.S. Kaburu on countback was Japheth Obonyo.

The ladies prize went to Sumali Jayasinghe on 37 points. Emerging the best among the Sunset members was Murwithania Mugambi on 34. He won by two points from Wellington Omodho, Elijah Adul, Philip Kungu and Ben Handa all of who had posted 32 points each. The Sunset lady winner was Lucy Awiti with 23 points.

At Muthaiga, lady golfer Samira Furrer won the overall title in the AFBE golf tournament with an impressive score of 71 points. The men’s prize went to Uday Rajani who beat Sonal Shah on countback with 38 points and taking the gross on level par 71 gross was Jeff Kubwa. In the ladies’ section, Grace Mucheru returned 36 points to win by three points from Florence Maina and Kellie Gachaga on 33 was the junior winner.

At Vet Lab Sports Club, Zack Koech playing off handicap 10, posted 22 points in the first nine and 20 at the back nine for a total of 42 points to take the overall title in the Communications Authority(CA) corporate golf tournament. The men’s title went to S.K. Mwaura with 40 points, beating J.M.

Mwaura, Cleophus Bor, and lady winner Jean Mathenge by one point. Jane Njau on 37 points was second in the ladies section. In the guests category, Zack Koech carded 42 points to win by three points from Thika’s Watson Burugu while A. Nzamu was third on 38 points after a countback with George Makori.

James Njeru carried home the staff prize after posting 34 points and Pauline Karanja was the best lady guest with 35 points. Maina Iraki emerged the best junior on 34 points and the senior winner was Patrick Muiruri on 36 points.
