  • It is in recognition of golfing excellence in the country.
  • Wanjiru said ladies from as far away as Eldoret, Nakuru, Nyali in Mombasa, Nyeri and some from the Nairobi-based clubs had already confirmed participation.

A special golf event to recognise golfing excellence in the country is set for Muthaiga Golf Club’s par 71 course ton Friday.

The first of its kind, the Inaugural National Lady Legends Golf Day is a brainchild of former Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) chairman Lucie Maina, the legendary Florence Maina and one of Muthaiga’s leading lady golfers Agnes Wanjiru. It is in recognition of golfing excellence in the country.
The three have represented the country in international events for many years.

“The idea behind this tournament is to recognize ladies who have represented the country in international competitions over the years such as the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) and the Gilbertson and Page (G&P) Trophy, to encourage lady golfers to bring down their handicaps, and encourage juniors to aspire to golf excellence," said Agnes Wanjiru.

The tournament is open to ladies with a handicap of 14 and under.

The event will be played in medal format and gross scores will take precedence over nett scores.

There will be two categories of players, with the main one being those playing off handicap nine and under, and the other category will be open to handicap 10 to 14.

There will, however, be invited guest players who will include current men national team members, Junior Golf Foundation (JGF) Junior players, Kenya Ladies Golf Union (KLGU) officials, Kenya Golf Union (KGU) officials, former KLGU chairpersons and sponsors of the event who include UAP, Migaa and Air Kenya.

Wanjiru said ladies from as far away as Eldoret, Nakuru, Nyali in Mombasa, Nyeri and some from the Nairobi-based clubs had already confirmed participation.

She added: “As of today (Wednesday), over 50 ladies have been confirmed for the event and we are hoping to have many more by the time the draw is being done. We look forward for a successful event.”
