Nandi’s Serem tops ‘Nation’ Circuit

  • Gideon Serem of Nandi Bears Club’s beat a field of 84 for his maiden victory during the Western region leg of Nation Golf Circuit held at Kakamega Sports Club at the weekend.
  • Playing his second golf tournament, handicap 28 Serem, a fairly long hitter, posted 40 stableford points on the tough course to claim a beautiful golf bag and a trophy.
  • He parred the three par fives in the first nine and, despite scratching the 10th also a par five, he went on to make pars on the 14th, 16th and 17th for his 40 points to beat Kakamega’s James Akhonya by two points.

Gideon Serem of Nandi Bears Club’s beat a field of 84 for his maiden victory during the Western region leg of Nation Golf Circuit held at Kakamega Sports Club at the weekend.

Playing his second golf tournament, handicap 28 Serem, a fairly long hitter, posted 40 stableford points on the tough course to claim a beautiful golf bag and a trophy.

“I thank God that after playing my first tournament only a week ago in  Kitale, I have managed to win the second event here. Winning a Nation event is like a dream and must thank my playing partners for encouraging me on,’’ Serem, a member of a strong contingent from Nandi Bears led by former Nandi captain Tom Murunge, said.

He parred the three par fives in the first nine and, despite scratching the 10th also a par five, he went on to make pars on the 14th, 16th and 17th for his 40 points to beat Kakamega’s James Akhonya by two points.

Another local player, Patrick Jahazi, carded 37 points to claim the third prize as Phoebe Nyangweso, also on 40, clinched the ladies prize. And returning to action after five months, Yours Truly posted 29 points to claim the staff prize as Kakamega’s Hesbon Litali went home with the prize for the best gross.

Club chairman Eliud Siganga was the guest winner with 27 points. Principal Secretary in the Information Ministry Sammy Itemere, who is also the immediate former chairman of Royal Nairobi Golf Club, won the first nine with 21 points.

The second nine went to Charles Williams from Kisii Sports Club. Club chairman Eliud Siganga and captain James Anzabwa thanked the Nation Media Group for staging its first leg in this year’s series at Kakamega for the first time since 2001.

Speaking on behalf of the Nation Media Group, Emeka Gikara Mayaka, NMG’s Regional Editor (Western), said the series was aimed at bringing NMG’s clients and stakeholders together to network.

“These events gives us an opportunity to thank and appreciate you all us our customers for the support you usually give us through our various platforms,’’ he said.

Besides the tournament, NMG had donated textbooks worth Sh200,000 to Igoma Primary School in Nyamache Kisii County on Friday.
