‘Nation’ circuit grand finale set for Friday

As expected, a huge field of 192 players was finally drawn to vie for some fabulous prizes in this year’s Nation Golf Circuit grand finale at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course on Friday.

Because of the big field and being a weekday, teeing off starts at 7am with 1.45pm being the last tee off in the afternoon. Unlike the previous events where players qualified from various clubs in the country in order to battle it out in the grand finale title, this year, participation is by invitation as the event doubles as the Nation Media Group Corporate Day.

Some 14 prizes including a 42-inch television, which goes to the overall winner, will be at stake.

Muthaiga being the host, has the highest number of players. However, entries were also received from most of the clubs in Nairobi and as far away as Nyahururu and Machakos.

The format is stableford off full handicap, a system that favours those in the middle and high handicap bracket. However, a number of the single figure players at Muthaiga have been posting good scores lately and it will be interesting to see how they perform. These include club vice chairman Bhavnish Chandaria, John Gitonga, Wachira Mahihu, Evans Vitisia, Mwai Mbuthia, and Selest Kilinda.

There is also the strong Machakos team led by club chairman Collins Kaloki  that includes golfers like Larry Wambua, James Ndunda, Francis Njeru, Fred Kilonzi and Machakos captain Dee Kivuva. Leading the hunt for the staff prize will be Nation Media Group chairman Wilfred Kiboro. Also in action will be the new NMG CEO Joe Muganda.
