Niraj Mulji wins junior matchplay contest

Sigona Golf Club’s Niraj Mulji is the Kenya Junior Matchplay champion.

Mulji beat Thika Sports Club’s Brian Omondi 3-2 in the final match of this year’s championship sponsored by Kingsway Tyres at Sigona Golf Club on Friday.

Mulji made it to the final after beating boys’ strokeplay champion Mutahi Kibugu of Muthaiga 1-up in the semi-final while Omondi overcame Parth Savani in the other last-four contest.

Taking the Windsor trophy for those aged between 14 and 15 years was Kaash Padam of Railway, who beat Njogu Kungu 6-5 in the final. Njoroge Kibugu took the 13-years-and-under trophy after registering a 3-2 win over Aanav Hindocha.

In the girls’ category, Kenya’s top female golfer Naomi Wafula bounced back to form to beat Royal Nairobi’s Sarah Khanyereri to the title, though at the 19th hole.
The two finalists had eliminated Kellie Gachaga and Agnes Nyakio, respectively, in the semis.

In the Plate section, Zubair Khan beat Karan Chadha 3-2 in the final to take the 16 to 18 years category title while Virg Imani won the Windsor Trophy with a 5-4 victory against Stephen Orinda.

David Murigi was crowned the under 13 years champion after his 7-6 win over Harsh Patel.

The girls’ Plate winner was Loise Akinyi, who posted a 9-7 win over Natasha Karanja. Simon Ngigi won the gross subsidiary with 92 gross.

Junior Golf Foundation chairman Ashwin Gidoomal said they are focused on junior golf development programmes in the country.

“More plans are under way to spread the sport to schools in order to tap more talent,” he said.
