Otieno beats huge field on Nyanza course

Former captain of Nyanza Golf Club, Paul Otieno, was in his best form over the weekend, beating a field of 73 to clinch the overall title in this year’s AON Insurance golf tournament at the par-70 Nyanza Golf Club course.

Playing off handicap nine, Otieno who was in the flight of veteran golfer Dickson Katibi, dropped four shots at the front nine, two of them back-to-back from the third hole with a birdie at the sixth for a first nine 19 points.

“The course is tough at the moment because of the rains. One has to really carry the ball,’’ said Peter Owino who was beaten out of the prize list on countback with 35 points.

Finishing second with 37 points was Raju Bhayani who combined 22 and 15. In third place was Sam Onyango on 35 points. Onyango beat Joram Ajulu on countback while Kericho’s Abu Omollo won the first nine on 20 points, same as second nine winner John Orioro.

BEST LADY

At Eldoret, Prabh Lochab combined 20 and 18 for 38 to win the Commercial Bank of Africa golf tournament by a point from Arman Gujral and Ajay Soni. Caleb Kositany posted 36 points to finish fourth, a point better than Anand Lakhani and Wilson Sugut. Michael Elborn and Mani Sagoo won the longest drive as Caleb Kositany took the nearest to pin prize.

At Muthaiga, the pair of Stanley Gikandi and Adelbert Oomoria posted a total of 44 points made up of 23 and 21 to win the inaugural Corporate Golf League Four Ball Better Ball tournament.

The pair of Muthaiga chairman Henry Njoroge and P. Njuki on 43 points was sec0nd and the pair of Jane Nzibo and Susan Kanyora third on 43, losing the second place on countback. Winners of the corporate category were N. Musau and Edwin Kiarie on the day’s best score of 45 points made up of 20 and 25 points.

During the Smart Fellas Golf Day tournament Tanvir Sodi carded 37 points to win the overall prize while John Gitonga won the men’s first prize with 36 points.

He beat Evans Vitisia, Maina Karienye and Jeff Kubwa on countback and Susan Kanyora was the lady winner with 32 points, beating Mary Wainaina by a point. Arjun Bhachu led juniors with 37 points and B. Mutunga, on 36, was the best guest player.
