Vet Lab’s Otuke tees to victory in Goty tournament

  • At Nakuru Golf Club, Golf Park’s Agnes Nyakio carded gross 80 to lift the Silver division title in the Ladies Open, beating club-mate Mercy Nyanchama on countback. Home player Shiru Kaime was third on 85.

Vet Lab Sports Club’s Isaiah Otuke carded a two-round total of seven over par at the par-70 Kericho Golf Club at the weekend to win the Tea Fields trophy, a Kenya Golf Union Golfer of the Year (Goty) event.

Starting with five over par 75 in the first round where he was two shots behind Goty leader John Karichu, Otuke posted two over par on Sunday’s closing round for a total of 147 to win his first Goty title by three shots from Golf Park’s George Felix (77, 73), Stephen Njoroge (76, 74), and John Karichu with 73 and 77.

Taking the bronze title was Margaret Cheptumo with 97, followed by Ruiru Sports Club’s Irene Wamoro on 99 and Jennifer Mugweru was third with 105 gross.

The event started with the Stableford subsidiary won by Nyambura Muigai on 42 points, beating Alexandria Muhanji and Mary Kiruthi by two points.

The Mixed Foursomes event was won by the pair of Kysto Sisenda and Margaret Cheptumo on 38 points followed by the pair of Charles Mecha and Mary Kiruthi on 35 points.

Meanwhile, the organizing committee of the forthcoming Africa Amateur Golf Team Championship at the weekend received a Sh1 million boost from Kenya Power.

Kenya Power becomes the third organization to support the championship. Others are AAR Healthcare which will offer emergency rescue services during the five-day tournament which has attracted 18 countries. Access Kenya Group which will sponsore the media centre.
