Points up for grabs as Muthaiga Open tees off

What you need to know:

Kenya’s leading amateur golfers resume their hunt for the 2016 Golfer of The Year (GOTY) points with the Muthaiga Open this weekend at the par 71 Muthaiga Golf Club course, after last weekend's Africa Amateur Strokeplay Championship.
A field of 106 players has been drawn to battle it out for the Open title and take away prizes in addition to the GOTY and World Amateur Ranking points.
Those drawn include Royal Nairobi’s Kenneth Bollo, Railway's Alfred Nandwa, Limuru's John Kariuki and Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi.
The four represented Kenya during the Africa Amateur Strokeplay Championship in South Africa where they did not make the cut.
BOLLO'S RICH REIN OF FORM
Of the four, Bollo, has been in great form since last December when he won the Uhuru Shield at his home course and the season’s grand finale - the Nyali Open at Nyali Golf and Country Club in Mombasa.
He started this year's series with back to back victories in the Sigona Bowl and Mount Kenya Championship.
With those four titles already under his belt, Bollo, is certainly the man to beat this weekend at Muthaiga where Nandwa, Kariuki, Mudanyi, John Karichu, Paul Muchangi and home players Jeff Kubwa, John Gitonga, and Bo Ciera expected to put up a stern challenge especially with the absence of defending champion Bhavnish Chandaria.
The first round of the 54-hole event is set for 7am to be followed soon after by the second round at noon.
The third and final round whose draw will be seeded is set for Sunday morning.
LADIES OPEN
Meanwhile the country’s top female golfers will be at the par 72 Limuru Country Club course this weekend, for the first Ladies Open of the season.
At least 130 ladies including 63 in the Silver Division will vie for the open title with a number of prizes up for grabs in the event being sponsored by Kenya Orient Insurance company.
The company has been supporting the Kenya Ladies Golf Union’s major events over the past four years.
Leading the hunt in the Silver Division will be Naomi Wafula who will be up against the likes of Mercy Nyanchama, Joyce Wanjiru, Rachel Chebukati, Sarah Khanyereri, Shiru Kaime, Mary Karano and Florence Maina among many others.
In Thika, the newly constructed Thika Barracks, the second military golf course in the country, will host its official tournament (Chairman’s Prize).
It has attracted players from Machakos, Thika, Golf Park, Kenya Air Force Eastleigh and Ruiru Sports Club.
