Royal hang on to Tannahill Shield lead

Hosts Royal remained at the top by a point after the morning’s second round of the 2014 Tannahill Shield on Saturday at Royal Nairobi Golf Club.

Saturday’s meeting of favourites Royal and Muthaiga saw the two teams halve 4-4. Royal beat Windsor 7-1 to lead with a total of 26 points while Muthaiga collected maximum points from Windsor (8-0) for a total of 25, reducing Royal’s lead to only a point from four on the first day.

The pair of Royal’s Jay Sandhu and Quram Bhatti beat Muthaiga’s Ashwin Gidoomal and Evans Vitisia 2-1.

CIERA, OOKO WIN

Bob Ciera and national team player Erick Ooko won their match against Muthaiga captain Bhavnish Chandaria and his cousin Neer Chandaria 5-4. However, Muthaiga’s veteran Mwai Mbuthia teamed up with John Gitonga to beat Jatinder Thethy and Mugambi Murwithania 1-up, while Rajesh Bhabra and Kumar Dhall gave Muthaiga a 2-1 win against the Royal pair of Peter Muigai and Joshua Ichangi.

In the match against Royal and Windsor, Sandhu and Bhatti beat Avnish Bhandari and N. Chandaria 1-up, and the pair of Ciera and Eric Ooko posted a 5-4 victory against S. Villamizar and I. Khalid while Thethy and Mugambi halved with Z. Charania and A. Pribhai, but the two youngsters Muigai and Ichangi won 2-1 against A. Merali and Aneel Rajput.

Limuru remained third with 19 points after picking up four points from Western and beating Railway 5-3. Karen climbed to fourth on 18 points after beating Mombasa 6-2 and halving 4-4 with Sigona.

Sigona also beat Mombasa 6-2 to finish round two with 14 points. Three teams (Windsor, Western and Mombasa) were tying on 11 points, with Railway trailing on six. The third round of the tournament sponsored by Coca-Cola was going on by press time.
