Safaricom chips in with Sh3.5 million Kenya Open boost

Leading mobile services provider Safaricom is once again among the corporate organisations supporting this year’s Barclays Kenya Open golf championship which gets under way at Muthaiga Golf Club Thursday morning.

Safaricom announced a Sh3.5 million sponsorship towards this year’s tournament on Wednesday.

As the official Telecommunications sponsor, Safaricom will provide a fully kitted media centre and wireless connectivity to the secretariat, clubhouse and the village for the duration of the tournament.

The 49th edition of the tournament has attracted a total of 156 golfers from 28 countries, including 22 professionals and six amateurs, who will be battling it out for a share of the total prize fund of €220,000 (about Sh22 million). The winner will take home Sh3.9 million.

Speaking during the cheque hand over ceremony at Safaricom headquarters, the company’s Director Consumer Business Sylvia Mulinge said: “It’s a privilege for us to be part of yet another internationally acclaimed golf tournament just a few days after we participated in the inaugural Karen Masters."

“Safaricom continues to be a proud supporter of sports in Kenya, and remains committed to playing our role in transforming lives through sports.”

She said Safaricom had invested Sh15 million in sponsoring the tournament over the last three years in line with its desire to support events that raise Kenya’s profile as a choice destination for golf lovers.

“We have enjoyed a great relationship with the organisers of the Barclays Kenya Open and are optimistic that the golfers will deliver an excellent showcase over the four-day tournament."
