Kisumu’s Sate wins KCB Golf Challenge at Nyanza Club

Veteran Kisumu golfer David Sate beat a field of 90 players at the tough Nyanza Golf Club’s par 70 course, to clinch the third leg of the 2016 KCB Golf Challenge series on Saturday.

Sate, playing off handicap 14, set off with a strong 23 points in the first nine, which included two birdies at the fifth and ninth, despite his four bogeys including a double at the short hole-seventh.

“I had a strong first nine, which gave me the push, although I totally collapsed at the back nine. I am happy, since it has been long since I won anything here,” said Sate, who made six single bogeys, a double bogey, and a scratch at the 13th hole for 15 points and a total of 38 points.

“The course has become so tight since they introduced a number of out of bounds in several holes,” added Sate, who beat men winner Jiten Pabari and Mumias Golf Club’s Sirisaga Stephen by one point.

EMERGED STAFF WINNER

In the ladies’ section in the event, which attracted players from Kitale, Kakamega, Mumias, Kisii, and Kericho, Damaris Omori carded 35 points to claim the first prize, beating Nyanza’s Liz Akinyi by four points.

In the guest category, Muthaiga’s David Ombisi posted 35 to win by four points from Golf Park’s Willy Mastamet, while Peter Mwaura emerged the staff winner with 32 points. B.S Patel and Joseph Obiero won the first and second nines with 19 points each.

Hardeep Rajput and Rosemary Obara won the longest drive for men and women, while Joram Ajulu claimed the nearest to pin prize.

Speaking during the prize giving ceremony, KCB acting corporate director Peter Kathanga said: “We’re focused on building a credible professional rank and move amateur golf a notch higher. This event is among six tourneys cross the country.”
