Teenage player triumphs over seniors with ease

Golf Park’s Naomi Wafula picked her second national title this season when she beat a field of 107 lady golfers at the Limuru Country Club course.

The 15-year-old Wafula, from the Rose Naliaka Foundation, is chasing the Ladies Golfer of The Year (GOTY) which her coach Rose Naliaka dominated for many years.

Currently playing off handicap four, Wafula carded gross 75 to beat veteran golfer Mary Karano on countback. Her first victory this year was during the Ladies Open at Sigona where she fired gross 74.

Finishing third at Limuru where the event was sponsored by the club following the withdrawal of Kenya Orient, was Mary Monari also from the Golf Park-based Naliaka Foundation who carded 79 gross playing off handicap seven.

In the handicap division(nett), Sheila Mauladad of Muthaiga posted an impressive nett 68 to win by a shot from M. Muturi. Claiming the Bronze gross title was Margaret Thande who returned gross 93 to win by a shot from N. Steinman and E. McCarthy.

Nancy Mwai emerged the best in the nett division with a score of 68, beating Lilian Hurst by a shot.

The main event was followed by the Mixed Foursomes where the ladies were joined by Limuru’s men members where R.Gitau and Joe Wainaina, playing off handicap 13 and 10, posted 38 points to win ahead of Kenya Ladies Golf Union chairman Dorcas Mbalanya and Limuru Country Club chairman Yassin Awale who carded 35 points,

In third place, also with 35 points, was the pair of Grace Kimeria and J.N. Kimeria who lost the second place to the pair of Mbalanya and Awale on countback. David Githaiga and Joyce Wanjiru won the men and women’s longest drive contest while the nearest to pin award went to James Rwambo and Susan Matharu.

Mug of Mugs winner

At the 18-hole Vet Lab Sports Club, handicap 10 Eddy Magoa won the 36-hole Mug of Mugs and Christine Cup golf tournament sponsored by Avenue Healthcare Limited.

Starting with 82 in the first round, Magoa carded 74 in the second and final round, for a total of 156 nett. Taking the Christine Cup was Niral Shah also playing off 10. Shah combined 74 and 78 for a total of 152.

The ladies title went to Rael Munoru playing off handicap 31 who posted 73 and 88 for a total of 162 nett. Leading the invited guests in the event which attracted over 100 players was Shamick Patel who posted nett 77.

In the gross section, one of Vet Lab’s top players, Robinson Owiti, playing off scratch fired rounds of 79 and 78 for an aggregate 157 to beat Elisha Ogonji (76, 81).

The B division title went to Kariuki Njenga who posted nett 151 ahead of Birju Shah on 152 while Peter Karing’u was third on 155.

Taking the nett title in the C division was Rohit Shah with 148 beating Peter Kanari on 155 with O.L.Mbatia finishing third on 162.

The going was however tough for Mohan Shah who took the best effort prize with nett 169.
