Thika Sports Club’s Simon Ngige grabbed a one-shot lead going into Friday’s final round of the Sh1 million Jamii Telkom PGK Masters at Muthaiga Golf Club.

During Thursday’s third round, Ngige recovered from a double bogey at the sixth hole, to roll in a total of six birdies for a two under par 69, which pushed him to the top of the leader board on four under par total of 209.

He had picked five straight pars before the double bogey, which he recovered with birdies at the seventh and ninth.

“I hooked to the left rough, chipped out but not good enough to the green then made a three putt, but generally I am still hitting all the fairways and I hope to maintain my game,” he said.

Ngige birdied the first two holes on the back nine, dropped a shot at the 14th but birdied the 17th to go up on his own, with Royal Nairobi’s David Wakhu breathing fire with just a shot adrift after his third straight 70 for 210 on Thursday.

The other joint leader in the second round, Njuguna Ngugi dropped to fifth place on 213 after posting two over par 73 and a shot behind home pro Nicholas Rokoine and long-hitting Dismas Indiza who tied in the third place on 212.

Rokoine carded level par 71 while Indiza fired one under par 70 to put themselves within a striking distance for the top prize of Sh102,000.

A total of 21 pros made the second round cut in the event, which is aimed at preparing them for next week’s Barclays Kenya Open. They will be teeing off at 8am ahead of a huge field of amateurs.
