  • The last event in the 19-event series was the Windsor Classic in March where Kenya Railway Golf Club’s Samuel Njoroge won.
  • A field of 180 golfers will be converging on the par-71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course on Saturday for the AAR Corporate Golf Day.

Action in the Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) golf series, formerly the Golfer of The Year (Goty), resumes this weekend with the 2017 Winston Churchill Cup at the par-72 Thika Sports Club course.

The last event in the 19-event series was the Windsor Classic in March where Kenya Railway Golf Club’s Samuel Njoroge set off with an impressive three under par 69, but thereafter, he returned two poor rounds of 79 and 77 for a three rounds of nine over par 225.

With this score, Njoroge still managed to beat Muthaiga’s Jeff Kubwa by a shot. This victory also saw him clinch a place in Kenya’s national golf team which represented the country in the Africa Region Five Championship in Kitwe, Zambia where he was among the best performers.

Njoroge is among a field of 68 leading amateurs drawn at Thika where he is among the players to watch.

Other players drawn for this weekend include Njoroge’s colleagues in the national team Alfred Nandwa (Railway), Limuru’s John Karichu, and Vet Lab’s Edwin Mudanyi - who tied for third place with Nandwa during the Windsor event.

Also chasing some points towards the KAGC series will be veteran Robinson Owiti of Vet Lab, Limuru’s Paul Muchangi, Dennis Saikwa from Royal, Mike Kisia of Vet Lab, and Railway’s George Felix.

Hosting club Thika will be banking on players like Peter Rimui, David Matano and Edwin Kiarie among others.

The first round of the event being sponsored by Philips Kenya, is set for 7.30am on Saturday.

Elsewhere, a field of 180 golfers will be converging on the par-71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course on Saturday for the AAR Corporate Golf Day.

The event, which has attracted golfers from Nyali, Mombasa Golf Club, Malindi and Leisure Lodge, is dubbed “Labour Day Special”.

AAR Insurance returns to the Coastal City of Mombasa to bolster golfing standards in the region by extending its goodwill gesture to members and guest golfers.

With the current rains in Mombasa, the Nyali course at the moment is in great condition.

The event has attracted low and high handicappers, as well as the club’s top lady golfers. The low handicappers expected to battle it out include long-hitting Daniel Nduva, Allan Mola and William Kaguta among others.

AAR Insurance Managing Director Caroline Munene said: “The tournament is among the many tournaments we will be using to reach out to the golfing clientele and prospective clientele this year. We have sponsored the events with the noble objective to up golfing standards countrywide by offering golfers a competitive round of golf.”

The next AAR corporate golf will be held in Nakuru in June.
