Big names in Kenya’s amateur golf easily made it to the third round of this year’s Kenya Amateur Matchplay Golf Championship at Vet Lab Sports Club on Thursday.

Leading the top amateurs who include some of Kenya’s national team members, was Kenya Railway Golf Club’s Alfred Nandwa who beat home player Jack Mwangi 3-2 in the second round played in the morning.

Nandwa, who is also the current captain of Njoro Country Club in Nakuru County, was expected to meet Stephen Gichari of the Great Rift Valley Golf Resort in the third round. Nandwa lost in the final, beaten by Golf Park’s Boniface Koskei during last year’s Championship.

Other big names who made to the third round were Muthaiga Open champion Bhavnish Chandaria, Vet Lab’s Robinson Owiti, Justus Madoya from the Great Rift, and Kericho’s William Odera.

Chandaria beat Sigona’s Mohit Mediratta 3-1, and Owiti sent Limuru’s John Kariuki packing with a 3-2 victory as Madoya made it with a 2-1 win against Kevin Juma of Royal, while Odera won a closely fought battle with Simon Njogu.

Kenya's Golfer of the Year John Karichu meanwhile led those in the bottom side of the draw. He beat Kiambu’s Steve Karanja at the first hole of a sudden death and was due to meet Eldoret’s Musa Kisia who had beaten Nakuru’s Luther Kamau 2-1.

Karichu’s club-mate Paul Muchangi also qualified for the third round after beating junior player Tahir Mohammed from Nyali Mombasa 2-1.

The championship being sponsored by the Kenya Golf Union enters its crucial stage with the quarter and semi finals on Friday. The 36-hole final round will take place on Saturday along with the subsidiary event.
