Wambaa wins Johnnie Walker golf tournament title

Edgar Wambaa posted an impressive 39 points to claim the overall prize during the Johnnie Walker golf tournament at Limuru Country Club at the weekend.

Playing off handicap 17, Wambaa carded 21 points in the first nine and another 18 at the back nine, to beat men's winner handicap five John Gathu by two points.

However, the scores were not impressive in the ladies’ section where Mary Wainaina took the first prize on 32 points followed by Rose Gitau on 29 points.

The guest winner was V. Maina who returned a respectable 37 points.

At Machakos, Michael Kamala, playing off handicap 14, produced an impressive score of 40 points to claim the UAP/Old Mutual golf tournament title.

Kamala carded 21 points in the first nine and 19 at the back nine to beat men's winner Willy Muvea by four points. Ben Mumo finished second in the men’s section with 34 points. Steve Makau finished third on 32 points after beating Boniface Mutie on countback.

Taking the first prize in the guest category was Charles Kimiti on 35 points while Lydia Otieno, on 27 points, emerged the lady winner by beating Veronica Kona by a point, and Kevin Terry took the staff prize with 31 points. Josephat Mboya and John Maingi won the nines on 20 and 17 points.

COMBINED FOUR POINTS

The going was, however, tough for Ruth Mumo who combined four points from each nine to win the Piga Mingi prize with Readon Sakwa winning the longest drive for men, while Mwongeli Nzioka won the ladies’ prize. Victor Mutwii claimed the nearest to pin prize.

In Nakuru, handicap nine lady golfer Esther Karuga beat Raphael Kimani on countback with 35, to win the Captain’s Prize as Fr. Paul Gitonga on 34 points finished second in the men’s section behind Raphael Kimani.

“The course was very difficult with a lot of grass patches, so scoring was hard. With 35 points, I did not expect to be the overall winner,’’ said Karuga.

Eleanor Wambui took the first prize in the ladies’ section where she was followed in second place by Susan Ikua. 

At Kiambu, Timothy Kihara won the A divison in the May Mug with a score of 70 nett and Daniel Kamau taking the B division also on 70 nett as Geoffrey Waburi claimed the C division on 72 nett.

In the ladies section, Joyce Wanjiru shot net 75, while Michael Wanjohi and Don Mwaura won the nines on 35 nett each.
