1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia readies for show

What you need to know:

  • Concours d’Elegance is an annual event organised by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club since 1970, and is rated as the classiest event on the Kenya motor sport calendar.
  • The Concours rewards the owners of well-kept classic and vintage cars and bikes. 
  • This year, 32 cars and 21 motorcycles have been registered so far.

Paul Chemngorem’s 1962 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is the most recent entry to be receive for CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance set for September 24 at Nairobi Racecourse.

Volkswagen Karmann Ghia vehicles were made in very limited numbers and consisted of Volkswagen engines, gearboxes and suspensions fitted to a sleek coupe body made by Karmann, a German coach builder and designed by Ghia in Italy.

Apart from Chemngorem’s Volkswagen, Magdi Riad is reassembling a 1927 Dodge saloon car, and this is set to be the first vintage Dodge saloon car to appear at this event.

Leslie Carvel will be driving her 1970 VW beetle from Jinja to contest the up to 1300 cc touring Car Class, while newcomer Christine Omuombo is placing her hopes on her 1968 Beetle.

The large machines category will be categorised by the three-litre Mercedes Benz of Dr Joseph Alouch as well as a 1952 Chevrolet Deluxe entered by Magdi Riad. Riad a veteran car enthusiast, will also have a 1978 Ford Mustang muscle car in the line-up.
