  • St Anthony’s beat Butula 2-0 while Bukembe saw off Kapenguria Boys by a similar score-line in the semi-finals.

Bungoma County’s Bukembe Secondary School on Friday upset defending champions St Anthony’s Kitale 2-1 in the boys’ football final as the Airtel Rising Stars Nzoia Region Secondary Schools Term Two B Games came to an end at the Kawalesa Primary School, Lodwar.

National football girls’ champions Wiyeta Girls needed post-match penalties to overcome Tartar in the girls’ final. Wiyeta triumphed 2-1 in the spot kicks after the tie ended barren in both normal and extra time.

Matthew Ojuruta and Victor Omondi were on target for Bukembe, who will now fly the region’s flag at next month’s National Term Two B Games set for Kisumu.

Paul Epem had levelled for St Anthony’s “Solidarity Boys” but they were unable to recover after Omondi gave Bukembe the lead once again in the second half.

The two schools had also clashed in the preliminary stage in a tie that ended 1-1 but it is Bukembe who had the final say to qualify for their maiden national games.

“We have dreamt of going to the nationals and this result underlines the hard work we have put in as a team,” goal scorer Omondi told Saturday Nation Sport.

BEAT BUTULA

St Anthony’s have won the national title five times and are the only Kenyan school to have won the football title at the East African School Games.

St Anthony’s beat Butula 2-0 while Bukembe saw off Kapenguria Boys by a similar score-line in the semi-finals.

The girls’ final was closely contested with both defences alert during the nervy encounter. With no goals forthcoming after 120 minutes, penalties had to settle the contest.

Both teams missed their opening two penalties before Monica Etott and Stella Anyango scored the next two for Wiyeta.

Mary Wafula was the only player on target for Tartar as Wiyeta defended the title and now turn their attention on defending their national title.

“The conditions here made it difficult for my players to play well but nonetheless we did well and once again, we are champions,” Wiyeta coach Edgar Manyara said.

Wiyeta beat Our Lady of Kakuma 3-1 in the semi-final while Tartar overcame Archbishop Njenga 1-0 in the other last four encounter.

In volleyball, national champions Malava Boys came from two sets down to win 3-2 (21-25, 22-25, 25-10, 28-26, 15-7) against Butula High School in the boys’ final.
