Buruburu, Highway win Makadara sub-county basketball finals

Buruburu Girls and Highway Secondary School on Sunday won the girls' and boys basketball finals in the Makadara Sub-County Term One Games at Aquinas Boys High School.

Buruburu, who are also the regional champions, thrashed rivals Our Lady of Mercy Girls 63-7 in a one-sided final, while Highway on the other hand had to dig deep to see of the hosts 34-25 in a closely contested boys' final.

Fowards Teresa Kedit and Stacey Ongwae starred for Buruburu as they outplayed a hapless Our Lady of Mercy. Kedit top scored with 18, while Ongwae sunk 16 points to help their team retain their title.

Two-time national champions Buruburu were on the offensive from the first quarter outscoring their opponents 23-1. Our Lady of Mercy players then tightened their defence in a low scoring second period that saw them score one and a half baskets while Buruburu scored two points.

Buruburu improved in the third quarter to lead 17-1 and pressed home their advantage 21-2 in the final quarter to cruise to an easy win.

In the boys contest, the Highway duo Dennis Merunga and Mohammed Ali were menace in the Aquinas defence scoring 14 points each to hand their side the gong The finalists will advance to the Northern Sub-Region where they will do battle for the tickets to the Nairobi Region Games set for later next month.
