Kisumu got on the driving seat in the eighth minute when Austine Ochieng cut through Kanga’s defence for the opener and send the partisan crowd at Kisumu Boys playing grounds into a frenzy.

However, a determined Kanga, under the tutelage of Dickson Obure, cut short Kisumu’s celebrations in the 26th minute through a Timon Juma’s volley.

The second half was full of missed chances as both teams worked their feet out to break the deadlock.

Kanga School will feel they were denied an outright goal with 12 minutes left to the final whistle when Juma’s effort was ruled out for offside.

Kisumu coach Dan Otieno admitted that the situation had become tricky for his charges with two more tough ties against Barding and Kiendege respectively in the horizon.

“It was a tough match for both teams but I am satisfied with a point.

“I am confident we will win the next encounter.”

His counterpart Obure said: “Our minimum target was a point which we achieved. This result will serve as a stepping stone against Kiendege in the next match. We were under pressure especially playing against the champions.”

Barding defeated Kiendege 2-0 to top the group with three points.

Ziko Kombo, who bagged a brace, scored in the 41st minute before the break and added his second in the 68th. In a Pool B opener, Usenge from Siaya thrashed Omboga from Homabay County 3-2.

In girls' football, Cynthia Akinyi scored in the last minute to earn Nyakach a 2-2 draw against Omobera in the first match Pool A encounter.

David Mobisa coached-Omobera squandered a two-goal lead to end up with only a point from a match that could have gone in their favour.

Ngaila Mila scored the first goal in the 17th minute before Rose Kibore added a second in the 46th minute.

However, things got murkier in the second half after Lydia Kiru was cautioned for a poor tackle on Trizah Manyala in the box that resulted in a penalty.

Trizah Manyala netted the resultant penalty in the 55th minute which turned out to be a game changer.
