Aga Khan upset St George, Laiser hammer Muvuti in Nairobi

Schools on Thursday continued to battle for honours in the Regional Secondary Schools Term One Games.

In Coast Region, Aga Khan Academy upset boys’ basketball champions St George’s 39-33 at Kenyatta High. Aga Khan recovered from 23-20 at halftime outscore their opponents in the last two quarters 7-6 and 12-4 respectively.

Aga Khan coach Jimnah Kimani attributed his team’s win to hard work and a change in tactics at halftime.

“Our opponents are very tall and we had to change tactics,” he said. Kwale County champions Mazeras High beat hosts Kenyatta High 57-42 in another match.

Rugby 15s champions St George’s edged out Mghalu Secondary 19-7 while Kenyatta High beat Galana 18-13. East Africa boys’ hockey champions St. Anthony’s beat Nyangori High 2-0 to reach the semi-finals of the Nzoia Region Game in Bungoma.

Newton Juma and Okwak Kedias scored for the St Anthony’s. In boys’ basketball, Kapenguria High silenced St. Joseph’s 43-22, Friends School Kamusinga beat Chavakali 45-15, and Kimilili hammered Lodwar 50-13.

At the same time, the Kakamega High Court on Thursday allowed Kakamega High School rugby 15s team to take part in the regional showpiece. St Peter’s Mumias had earlier obtained an injunction stopping Kakamega from playing for fielding ineligible players.

Champions Maseno got their basketball title defence on a high thrashing Ambira 52-19 in the Lake Region Game played at St Mary’s Yala.  In another match, Kisumu Boys beat hosts Yala 60-44.

In the girls’ category, champs St Marys’ Mabera defeated Ng’iya 39-13 while Asumbi thrashed Itirio 27-17. In Highlands Region, Ikuu Boys upset hosts Meru School 5-3 in a rugby 15’ boy encounter. Champions Kangaru School hammered Isiolo boys 45-0.

In Metropolitan Region, hosts Laiser Hill stormed the semi-finals of the boys’ rugby 15s. The National and East Africa champions beat Muvuti 26-6 in the first game before hammering Nairobi School 48-0 in their second Pool ‘A’ match.

Laiser Hill captain Gedion Mbithi believes the team has what it takes to defend their crown after their good start.

“We started a bit slow in our first match before we got our groove in the second match. If we keep playing like this we will win the title," Mbithi said.

In Pool ‘B’, Upper Hill got off a too a good start after a 75-0 win over Kasikeu in their opening match. Brue John, Jonhstone Olindi, Saidi Sambu and Jonathan Madrugada grabbed two tries each.
