Stiff competition is expected Friday morning as schools converge on different venues across Nairobi County for the Sub-Region Term One Secondary School Games.

Nairobi County has three sub-regions, Nairobi West, Nairobi East and Nairobi Northern and schools will be battling for top honours as well as slots to the regional games. The games will feature hockey, basketball and rugby 15s.

In Nairobi West, Nairobi County Girls basketball champions Parklands Arya will get proceedings underway against Starehe Girls in Pool A at State House Girls.

Arya will later take on Ngara Girls in their final pool match as they bid to reach the semi-finals to be played on Saturday. Arya will be favourites to go all the way having dominated the discipline in Nairobi over the last five years.

The Godfrey Mwaloma-coached side qualified for the sub-region games after an emphatic 85-10 win over St Georges in the Westlands Sub-County games final. Mwaloma has once again warned his charges to be on top of their game.

“The first target is to ensure we reach the next stage because we are eyeing to go all the way to the nationals. We will need to be at our best to ensure we keep the dream alive,” the tactician told Nation Sport.

Arya will be relying on forwards Mercy Mumo and Dorsilla Anyango to lead their charge during the two-day competition. The duo were instrumental in their win against St Georges sinking a total of 46 points. In Pool B, St George’s will come up against Pangani Girls and Mount Laverna.

In the boys contest, Strathmore School will fancy their chances of making it to the last four when they take on Garden Estate and Jamhuri High School in Pool A. Pool B will see Starehe Boys Centre lock horns with Our Lady of Fatima and Hospital Hill.

In hockey, hosts Nairobi School will be banking on home soil to reign supreme. They will battle Dr Ribeiro Parklands School, Hospital Hill and Starehe Boys Centre. The top two schools after the end of the round-robin matches will play in the final on Saturday.

In the girls’ affair, Pangani and Arya will be favourites to make it to the final. The two giants were kept apart in the draws. Arya are in Pool A which has Starehe and Ngara, while Pangani headline Pool B alongside Kianda School and Mount Laverna.

The top three schools in all disciplines will advance to the regional games later this month.
