There was confusion in the girls’ handball matches in this National Secondary School Sports Association Term 2 ‘A’ Games, after Shimba Hills moved to court seeking to be included in the event.

Kirigara Girls from Highlands Region was preparing to play St John’s Kaloleni, who qualified from Coastal Region, when they were informed that the game had been stopped.

In the order issued by the Mombasa High Court, Shimba Hills claims they were unfairly excluded from the event.

The school had beaten St John’s Kaloleni during the Coastal Region’s finals but were disqualified for allegedly fielding ineligible players.

The ban was effected after a team from the Ministry of Education investigated the matter and ruled that some players should not have been fielded.

COURT ORDER

However, Shimba moved to court and obtained an order that barred Kaloleni from taking part in the event.

The aggrieved school has named St John’s Kaloleni and Kenya Secondary School Sports Association as first and second respondents.

On Tuesday, Kenya Secondary School Sports Association officials were holed up in a meeting in a frantic last minute effort to seek reversal of the court order.

“They (Shimba Hills) obtained the orders ex parte and St John’s Kaloleni were not listened to. They have also moved to court to seek a reversal. Schools have their own mechanisms of resolving these issues and schools don’t usually rush to court,” said an official who declined to be named.

He, however, said they would comply with the court order.

In netball, national defending champions Obambo Girls from Lake region beat Kirigara Girls 54-13, to stamp their authority in the game.

The sleek moving players coordinated well to leave the Highlands representative flatfooted.

Striker Sheril Aluoch and Sarah Oduori both scored 36 and 18 points respectively, in a game they gelled well with the defence line comprising of captain Evelyn Akinyi and Caroline Achio.
