Dominant Kwanthanze retain Machakos volleyball title

National secondary schools girls’ volleyball champions Kwanthanze on Saturday beat Matuu Memorial Girls in straight sets to retain the Machakos County secondary schools championships title at Machakos School.

The one sided encounter saw the Kwanthanze, who are also the East African Secondary Schools champions, ease past hapless Matuu in straight sets of 24-3, 25-4, 25-7 to retain the crown as the county championships ended.

Matuu never troubled the dominant national champions as they managed only three points in the first set, four in the second and seven in the third set.

Kwanthanze coach Justin Kagwiri praised his charges after the impressive win noting that they were now targeting to retain their regional crown at the Metropolitan games which get underway next week.

“It was a nice work out but we did not get any serious resistance hopefully we shall get more competition at the regional games,” a confident Kagwiri told Nation Sport.

STROLLED PAST FATHER HEERNAN

In the semi-finals, Kwanthanze saw-off Father Heernan 3-0 (25-4, 25-2, 25-4) in a match that lasted 42 minutes, while Matuu Memorial came from one set down to beat Ikalaasa 3-1 (22-25, 25-17, 25-18, 25-12).

In the boys’ volleyball final, defending champions Katangi Boys also retained their title after beating Ikalaasa 3-0 (25-18 25-17 25-23. Earlier on, Katangi had an uphill task getting past a stubborn Mavoko Boys side in a tightly contested semi-final encounter.

Metropolitan region girls’ football champions Matuu Memorial Girls easily retained their county title with a convincing 4-0 victory over Masii Girls. Strikers Sheila Rono and Elizabeth Katungwa scored a brace each to ensure that the Yatta Sub-County students returned home with the trophy. In the boys’ final, Matuu High beat Mvuti 1-0 to successfully defend their boys’ title.
