  • After five rounds of chess action during the double round-robin competition, Kamau had won all but one of his games. His poorest result was a draw against Otieno Ligayi in his last game.

Olympiad-bound Jackson Kamau continued to underline his credentials when he won the Rapid Chess competition held at the Bomb Blast Memorial Park, Nairobi, on Sunday.

After five rounds of chess action during the double round-robin competition, Kamau had won all but one of his games. His poorest result was a draw against Otieno Ligayi in his last game.

Kamau recently took part in Olympiads qualifiers and sealed a place in the Kenyan team for the August tournament.

The new kid on the block finished with 5.5 points to walk away with Sh3,000. Ligayi finished second with five points and won Sh2,000 as Oyamo Martin came in third place with 4.5 points to take home with Sh1,000.

The second round started with Kamau as the sole leader. Eventually, the Eastlands Chess Club member wiped the floor to emerge victorious.

Oyamo consoled himself with a second place finish as Maigua Joseph pipped Andiwoh Moses in the last round to finish in third place.

In the traditional blitz that follows all rapid events, Oyamo started with a bang, winning eight out nine games.

However, Kamau recovered to win the blitz event too with nine points as Oyamo and Armon Sein shared second place.

Meanwhile, Chess Kenya will hold the National Youth Chess Championships at the Alliance Boys High School next month.
