Peter Kaberia replaces Richard Ekai as Sports Principal Secretary

  • The Sports Ministry is among 12 ministries affected by a mini-reshuffle done by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday.
  • In the changes, Amb. Richard Ekai, who until Friday was the Principal Secretary, Sports Development has been replaced by by Amb. Peter Kaberia. Ekai has been transferred to the Correctional Facilities Department.
  • The Correctional Facilities Department is under the Ministry of of Interior and Coordination of National Government which is headed by Joseph Nkaissery.

The Sports Ministry is among 12 ministries affected by a mini-reshuffle done by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday.

In the changes, Amb. Richard Ekai, who until Friday was the Principal Secretary, Sports Development has been replaced by by Amb. Peter Kaberia. Ekai has been transferred to the Correctional Facilities Department.

The Correctional Facilities Department is under the Ministry of of Interior and Coordination of National Government which is headed by Joseph Nkaissery. Ekai will be replaced at the Sports Ministry offices at Kencom House by Kaberia who moves in from the Defence Department.

At the same time, Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario remains in charge of the Sports Ministry, with Kaberia becoming the third Principal Secretary to work under him in four years. 

Ekai’s predecessor Patrick Omutia worked under Wario for just over a year before he swapped places with Ekai and moved to the Mining Industry.

Ekai and Wario have also been in the spotlight in recent months, with both pleading their innocence over allegations of irregular dealings in relation to the bungled Harambee Stars trip to Cape Verde for an international assignment in November 2015, and Team Kenya’s woes at the 2016 Olympic Games.
