Kakamega begin bid for title with resounding victory

Kenya’s Kakamega High School started their campaign for rugby 15s glory with a 21-9 thrashing of national champions Bungoma High in the Brookside East African Secondary Schools at Eldoret Sports Club on Monday.

Kakamega, who boast of four East Africa titles, dominated Bungoma from the beginning of the match to the end.

In rugby Sevens, Upper Hill of Kenya silenced St Mary’s Kisubi 49-0 in a one-sided match. Said Abdalla and Maxwell Omondi stole the show for Upper Hill.

In handball Kenya’s Makongeni Secondary were narrowly beaten 29-28 by Kigoma Secondary from Burundi in a tightly-fought match at the same venue.

Kigoma’s Shumbusho Giberire scored the highest points for the winners while Hillary Lang’at was the golden boy for Makongeni.

In girls’ football, Kenya’s Nginda beat ETG Nyakabiga, while Hanika enjoyed a sweet 1-0 victory against hard-fighting Mukono on 1-0.

In girls’ basketball, national champions Kaya Tiwi fell 38-37 to Burundi’s Lycee du Lac Tanganyika in their Brookside East Africa Secondary School games match at Moi Girls High School in Eldoret on Monday.

Tiwi dominated the first three quarters and held at 35-33 lead in the last quarter. But they could not hold their nerves to seal victory, as in the end, Lycee du Lac Tanganyika’s persistent efforts secured them a second win against their strong opponents.

In their first match, Lycee beat College Gisenyi 53-38, while Tiwi thrashed compatriots Barchando 94-32. Lycee now top Pool B, and coach Bikirimana Nicolas said the win is a boost ahead of their match against Barchando on Wednesday.

BARCHANDO HUMBLED

In another match, Kenyan debutants Barchando were humbled 66-40 by Ugandan champions Buddo SS.

Barchando, who made their maiden appearance at the national and regional games this year, have since lost their first two matches to Kaya Tiwi and Buddo SS by 94-32 and 66-40, respectively.

Head coach Hermon Omondi blamed the losses on lack of concentration early in the matches, giving opponents an upper hand. The side will face College Gisenyi in a must-win match on Tuesday at 2p.m.

“The loss by Tiwi means we still have a chance. All we have to do is concentrate in the next game and avoid mistakes,” he told Daily Nation Sports on Monday.

In the boys’ basketball matches, a spectacular display by Burundi’s ETG Nyakabiga secured them a first win after they thrashed Kenya’s Alliance 88-28.

Buddo from Uganda also beat Rwandese APE Rugunga 74- 65 in a competitive match.

Kaya Tiwi, who came into the match confident after thrashing compatriots Barchando (94-32), met a never tiring Burundi champions who never gave them the chance to have a far stretched lead.
