IN HUYE, RWANDA

Kenya’s Kangaru School settled for silver after losing 14-21 to home side Ste Familie in main cup final of rugby sevens played at the TTC Save grounds on Saturday.

Peter Niyoyita scored the first try for the hosts after just two minutes and Carlos Isimbi converted to give the home side a 7-0 lead. Before Kangaru could settle down, Familie extended their lead as Gerard Niyoneza touched down a try and Isimbi converted his second as the home team took a 14-0 lead at the drinks.

Jean Hakizimana added another try after the break, with Isimbi making it a hat-trick of conversions. Kangaru finally scored two tries through Hannington Mmboga, with Kelvin Mburu twice converting.

But it was too late for the Kenyans as the home side held on to take gold in the inaugural rugby sevens final. National champions St Peters Mumias took bronze after beating Uganda’s St Joseph Layibi 46-0 in the third place play-off. Kangaru coach Benson Mwenda was disappointed with the result, saying his team took time to settle down.

“We switched off in the first half and that is where the game was lost, we allowed our opponents too much time and they punished us, it is a bitter pill to swallow,” Mwenda said.

In rugby 15s, national champions Laiser Hill will be crowned winners if they avoid defeat in their final preliminary match against Uganda’s Hanah Mixed today. Laiser edged out compatriots Kakamega High 6-3 yesterday to record their fifth win from five matches played so far.

Two penalty conversions from Laiser Hill’s John Oliale handed the Kenyan champions the vital win.

Kenya will also be looking to take silver and bronze in the discipline. Second-placed Maseno will play third-placed Kakamega and hope Laiser Hill beat fourth placed Hana Mixed to enable Kenya sweep all the medals.

Fanuel Aduda-inspired Maseno beat Burundi’s EPCM 50-0 to move to 17 points. Aduda scored a hat-trick of tries on either side of halftime and set up three more for Walter Oteku.
